21 dead in Bangladesh factory fire

Friday, February 26, 2010 | 0 comments

At least 21 people have been killed and 50 injured in a fire at a Bangladesh clothing factory, local television channels said.
The fire raged for more than two hours at the Garib and Garib Newaj Garment factory in Gazipur, about 50 kilometres north of the capital, Dhaka.
Fire services said 18 workers were seriously injured, 13 of them women.
Clothing factories in Bangladesh are prone to fires as a result of poor safety standards. The textile industry is one of the country's most important, accounting for more than $US10 billion in exports annually, around 80 per cent of total exports.
Eleven firefighters brought the blaze under control after more than an hour and rescue crews searched the building for the dead and injured.
A local reporter said some of the injured were fighting for their lives in hospital and the death toll was likely to rise.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Relatives of the victims flocked to the scene.

Genetic Factor affects the Sexual Attraction

Saturday, February 20, 2010 | 0 comments

Reunions between birth relatives separated by adoption can spark off intense sexual feelings, according to a visiting psychiatrist. Maurice Greenburg, a consultant to London's Post-Adoption Centre, was speaking at the Adopting New Ways conference about genetic sexual attraction, a phenomenon he has studied. During the study he analysed 40 case histories and interviewed 10 people who said they had experienced this attraction. The reunions included those between parents and children and between siblings. The people concerned were both heterosexuals and homosexuals.

Four of the six he interviewed said they had engaged in a sexual relationship with their birth relative while others described experiences ranging from intense erotic feelings toward their relatives to sexual behaviour such as fondling and touching. When meeting their lost relative for the first time the respondents all experienced "an overwhelming and complicated rush of emotions" and an "almost irresistible sense of falling in love." They all said they had a need to discover an unusual form of closeness and intimacy with their relative, who had felt the same way.

Dr Greenberg said the respondents had discovered themselves in their relative as a form of mirroring. "It seemed almost inevitable that they would express this through sexual intimacy, and when this resulted in sexual intercourse the sexual urge was described as irresistible." He said the prevalence of genetic sexual attraction was unclear, though staff at the Post Adoption Centre had estimated it affected up to half the centre's clients.

Factors that could contribute to these sexual feelings included the mutual attractiveness of physical similarity and the fact that when they were last together, when the adopted child was six months old and under, their physical relationship could have included fondling and close skin contact. Dr Greenberg said in these cases the absence of early bonding diminished the incest taboo and encouraged genetic sexual attraction.

Nature:

Experienced between mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, and between more distant relatives, but most common between siblings of opposite sex who bear a close resemblance. It takes the form of an overpowering, almost electrical grip of emotion, associated with an inability to keep away from the other person and an almost primordial sense of having belonged together all their lives. The attraction gives rise to a sense of underlying shame and guilt, together with a feeling of rejection that may prevent effective communication because the emotions are too threatening to share with anyone. This may be compounded by any sexual relationship resulting from the attraction.

Incidence:

Particularly noted in the case of adopted children who are subsequently reunited with the biological parent or sibling of the opposite sex, seemingly because the normal bonding mechanism has been disrupted.

Genetic attraction is a frequently noted response to reunion. Feelings include the need to touch, to spend time together, talk and share. Suggested reasons for the attraction include:

bulletSimilar Characteristics - Similar genetic makeup can produce similarities in temperament, appearance, and other areas that are common in all birth families to a certain extent.
bulletSelf-Love - While we may not want to admit it, we generally tend to feel more comfortable with those whose characteristics are similar to our own.
bulletAromatic Identification - It has been suggested that a subconscious memory of the smell of one's own family may be recognised and, if so, would cause an actual physical reaction.

When the desire to consummate the relationship enters the equation, genetic attraction becomes genetic sexual attraction.

Fear of Discovery/ Fear of Separation

Acknowledging the existence of such feelings raises the spectre of incest, and when these feelings become so intense that they threaten to cross the line over into the realm of physical and deep emotional involvement, many break off the relationship completely, or limit its scope rather than try to talk about it. Others can be so overcome by fear of another separation that they too keep silent but, instead of pulling away, may view a sexual relationship as the only way to keep the connection alive.

Confront It

As with any issue, this needs to be met head-on despite its sensitive nature. It is a natural human desire to be with our own, and it's not at all unusual to react with excessive emotion when experiencing reunion. If you find yourself "falling in love" or sexually attracted to a new-found birth family member, here's what the experts advise:

bulletStrong feelings of attraction are not abnormal.
bulletThere's nothing wrong with you.
bulletRecognise the initial excitement for what it is: the first rush and thrill of reunion, and the birth of love for family.
bulletRemember that relationships take time to develop, and that goes for long-separated birth family members as well. Time will serve to settle the relationship in its proper context.
bulletTalk to others who have experienced reunion.
bulletFind a support group whose leader is comfortable talking about the subject.
bulletSeek counseling from an experienced adoption therapist.

Latest Maoist Attack in India

Thursday, February 18, 2010 | 0 comments

At least 24 troops have been killed on Monday by Maoist rebels.

It has warned that action will be taken against any officers found responsible for "lapses" leading up the attack.

West Bengal Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said that intelligence reports suggested that Maoist rebels were in the area prior to the attack.

It was the biggest strike ever carried out by the rebels in West Bengal.

Nearly 50 Maoists on motorcycles encircled the camp of the Eastern Frontier Rifles (ERF) at Silda village and started firing on it.

More fighters joined the assault on foot, firing from automatic weapons.

More than 6,000 people have died during the rebels' 20-year fight for communist rule in many Indian states.

The Indian government recently began a major offensive against the rebels in several states.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the Maoist insurgency as India's "greatest internal security challenge".

The rebels now have a presence in 223 of India's 600-odd districts.

'Maoist mole'

Intelligence officers told BBC that two specific alerts were issued which warned of such an attack on the Silda camp.

"We issued one alert on 23 November 2009 and another one just two days before the attack - on 13 February," said a highly placed intelligence officer.

The government has launched a major offensive against the rebels

The alerts said that mobile squads of the Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) - the armed wing of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) - may attack the camp.

"None of our alerts was taken seriously. Had officers acted upon our reports, this carnage could have been avoided and 25 lives would have been saved," the officer said.

The state police chief, along with other senior officers, visited the site of the attack on Tuesday and found what they said were "a number of lapses on the part of the security forces".

"The EFR men were not at all ready to strike back in case of an attack. Many of the men were not even carrying their arms," commented an officer.

Part of the inquiry's remit will be to assess whether any police officers "connived with" guerrillas before the attack.

Officers say that they are also investigating whether "Maoist moles" within the force are stealing ammunition from the state's armoury.

Janayuddha-Great Revolution in Nepal Through Prachanda Path

Formula: Mao's Theory plus Swiss Model equals Prachanda Path
Neither it was a "media-misquote" nor the Maoists' party head was found in a drunken state before heading for his maiden trip abroad.
The media in Nepal is regularly blamed for misquoting the leaders. Media's loyalty is always in question.
For example, the recent "Minor King Saga" wherein the Prime Minister later blamed the media men for misquoting his remarks in English that he had made in front of a Pakistani Media Delegation, is one among so many frequently happening entertaining incidents.
Not only the octogenarian Prime Minister but the Maoists Chief Prachanda himself has been misquoted (?) in the past. Whether it were a "media-misquote" or something else, only time will tell.
Prachanda after meeting the visiting Norwegian Minister Eric Sollheim is on record to have said that Norway was ready to support the Maoists in their endeavor towards establishing a democratic republic in Nepal.
However, Sollheim later refuted such claims when requested by a lady journalist to confirm his statement, added: "I would never say so" and left the decision for the sovereign citizens of this county.
The partisan Media here too is not to be taken for granted as foreign emissaries are regularly misquoted by our reporters, either lack of adequate command in the English language or deliberate it is that suits to their political affiliation. Since we have Journalists' Associations of the likes of Revolutionaries, Lokatantrik, Prajatantrik, Nationalists and many more, Media's loyalty is always questionable. Is it for the people or for their masters this loyalty?
And there are also some episodes wherein our leader(s) themselves have been found in a drunken state while making public appearances.
A Nepali prominent leader, who appears more often in media due to his unchallengeable analytical skills, is frequently found in a drunken state. However, he has never been reported to have misbehaved or making irrational comments dragging criticisms alike Prachanda or Girija Prasad Koirala who are found in normal conditions in general.
For our ailing Prime Minster though it seems normal to make irrational talking citing his age-factor but for Prachanda, the once ferocious, his irrational comments may have come as a Himalayan worry for the party itself.
Look what Prachanda- the nouveau democrat, talking to the media in the VVIP lounge of the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu said before taking to his maiden trip abroad.
"We have been analyzing Switzerland's Federal Model from the days of our rebellion. Switzerland is a capitalist country and its federal structure could be implemented in Nepal. This is our objective of flying to Switzerland this time". Hope Prachanda will not retort to his statement a la Girija Prasad Koirala upon his return to his home country.
With over more than two-decades of life remaining underground, studying and preaching age-old defunct communist ideology and finally waging an armed revolt with an objective of communist dominance in one of the world's poorest country, hope Prachanda this time was really misquoted by the media that reports, "Prachanda in search of capitalist federal model flies to Europe".
Seems, as much as is visible, Prachanda too appears to have concluded that Mao's days and his ideologies have no place in Nepal!
Or will he some how or the other link Mao's theory with the imported Swiss copy? If he does so, the new political cocktail would some what be closer to what he claims to be Prachanda Path.
